“Teacher when will be our election of officers?”, One of my student asked a week after the opening of classes. This year is my first year of handling the third section of the Fast Learners’ class. I always look forward too on having class officers so there will be someone to lead my class then. But back in my mind, I’m still doubtful if these students will really be able to lead the class. Do these children really possesses the qualities of selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and especially leadership? Am I too unrealistic and weighing these children on a high standard?
I realize then that in the four-walled of my classroom starts the foundation of having good governance. From the Good Governance Standard for Public Services, Good governance flows from a shared ethos or culture, as well as from systems and structures. It cannot be reduced to a set of rules, or achieved fully by compliance with a set of requirements. This spirit of good governance can be expressed as values and demonstrated in behavior which is from within the person itself.
Sometimes I often caught myself judging my students on the way they talk, walk, dress, and even their character and capabilities. I thought, first impressions last but I was wrong. I wonder if these children might become one of the President of the Philippines, a senator, a congressman, a lawyer, a doctor, a veterinarian, a banker, a financier and even a teacher like me…
One day, a student of ours visited and shared her experience being one of the grantee of the scholarship she attended abroad, I really felt glad I was a part of her life and she’s thankful too. With the struggles and sacrifices a teacher may experience, I can’t count with my fingers the students whom I have touched their lives. I understand I wasn’t unrealistic then. But helping mold lives that I believe they will exist, whom will become god-fearing, competent and inspiring leaders someday. ☻
